Why Do People Retire Their Horses? Understanding The Most Common Reasons

At Equine Retirement Livery, we often speak with owners who are making the difficult—but responsible, decision to retire their horse.

Whether due to age, health, or a change in lifestyle, retirement is a natural stage in many horses’ lives.

But what are the most common reasons owners choose this path?

Recent research from SPILLERS, in collaboration with the University of Kentucky’s Gluck Equine Research Center, sheds light on this question.

Here’s what they found, and how it relates to the horses we care for at Glebe Farm and Moor Farm.

1. Health Conditions Are the Leading Cause

The majority of horses are retired between the ages of 15 and 24, with health issues being the most common reason. Conditions such as laminitis, lameness, degenerative suspensory ligament desmitis, and osteoarthritis were frequently cited. These issues can limit a horse’s ability to work comfortably, even with treatment.

At our livery, we’re experienced in managing horses with these conditions, offering tailored care routines and field setups that support their comfort and mobility.

2. Age-Related Muscle Loss

Around 1 in 6 horses in the study were reported to have low muscle mass, which can affect both welfare and work ability. Risk factors included age, PPID (Cushing’s), and reduced exercise. Geldings were found to be more prone to muscle loss than mares.

Our team monitors body condition closely and adjusts feeding, turnout, and routines to support healthy weight and muscle maintenance, especially important for older horses.

3. Lifestyle Changes and Owner Decisions

Not all retirements are due to medical issues. Some owners choose to retire their horses after a long career, or when their own circumstances change. Others want to give their horse a well-earned rest after years of service in leisure or competition.

We understand that every retirement story is different. That’s why we offer flexible options at both Glebe and Moor Farm, whether your horse needs a quieter herd or more space to roam.
